Experience
Sarah develops clinical interventions to support people with complex challenging behaviours and learning disabilities, specialising in supporting adults on the autistic spectrum and people with additional mental health needs. Sarah worked as a Behaviour Consultant for the Institute of Applied Behaviour Analysis in California where she developed her philosophy of positive behaviour support. www.IABA.com
In addition to clinical work Sarah has provided training in the areas of positive person-centred behavioural support and carrying out audits and service evaluations using total quality assurance systems for numerous organisations in the UK.
Clinical Philosophy
Sarah’s focus is on decreasing challenging behaviour and increasing positive behaviour by adopting a person centred positive support philosophy. Sarah uses non-aversive positive behavioural strategies to teach skills and change behaviour.
Sarah believes all service users, including those with challenging needs, should be supported utilising a positive approach to live a high a quality of life. This includes ensuring service users access community activities and develop new skills to increase their independence.
Sarah encourages collaborative working with all people in a service user’s support network, including families, carers and professionals.
Role in White Leaf Care
Sarah has provided her expertise from the point of inception and has been involved in the development of the philosophy of the organisation and has written our challenging behaviour policies and procedures.
Sarah provides staff training to ensure the philosophy of positive behaviour support underpins all our work and staff achieve the competencies required to meet our service users’ needs, which includes:
- Understanding challenging behaviour from a positive behaviour support perspective
- Proactive and reactive strategies to manage challenging behaviour
- Emergency management strategies
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Sarah also conducts functional behavioural assessments which helps to understand service users’ needs. Sarah will then develop an individualised behaviour support plan which includes proactive and reactive strategies to support the service user to achieve the highest quality of life.
